El Tiempo Latino!!!

Playing the Greatest Latino Hits

BIENVENIDOS A MI BLOG!!!

Hola everyone! Welcome to El Tiempo Latino’s blog. Tiempo Latino is the name of my radio show, which you can listen to on www.radiolaspositas.com on Mondays from 12 noon – 2 PM. I am your host, Mariano, and from now through December, I’ll be playing all of the greatest hits created by Latino and Spanish speaking musicians from various periods of time. Also, I will be playing music from up-and-starting/non-mainstream musicians who’s music haven’t reached the airwaves.

However, I do need your help: if you have a suggestion (like you think I should play a song that you like or is/was a hit), feel free to drop a line here in my blog, on the radiolaspositas.com chat room, or through AIM. My screenname for AIM is rlpdjonair, but you can also call me at the station’s phone, which is (925) 424-1220.

11/17/08 – Tiempo Latino Broadcast #8

Muy buenas tardes!!! It’s Mariano! Your host of Tiempo Latino on RadioLasPositas.com. Before I get into the juicy parts of today’s program, just wanted to remind everyone that Tiempo Latino was not “on the air” last week due to Veterans Day. But, we’re back, and oh God are we back!!

I honestly don’t really know exactly why this happened, but I kept blanking out during the show. Just to give you a quick crash-course on being a DJ, you get to choose what will be played on a radio show, plus any other conversations, bits of news, etc. As I’m working in the booth and talking to you guys (and playing music), I have playlists already written down, CDs cued up, and Firefox booted up on the computer with RadioLasPositas.com, Facebook, my WordPress blog, and YouTube! opened in various tabs. So yea, it’s kinda busy, but you get used to it. I guess it was because of not broadcasting last week or the fact that Chops (DJ of the Chop’s Chop Hour on Tuesdays) came in and talked to Sean and I on/off the air, that I kept blanking out on the job today (sorry guys!).

Anyways, like I stated on the air, this past Thusday (November 13), Houston hosted the 2008 Latin Grammys. So, what better way to honor those who won awards than play their songs? For the first-quarter of the show, I played various songs that won awards Thursday night, along with some other songs that had nothing to do with Thursday’s award ceremony, but sound cool anyway :)

Here’s the playlist:

*BOLD ITALICS mean the award won for that song, award won for the album that song is on, and/or an award the artist won.

  • “Me Enamora” – Juanes (Record of the Year; Song of the Year; Best Short Form Music Video)
  • “Esta Soledad” – Kany Garcia (from Best Female Pop Vocal Album “Cualquier Día”; Kany Garcia also won for Best New Artist)
  • “Mais Que Nada” – Sergio Mendes
  • “Esta Vez” – Cafe Tacvba (Best Rock Song)
  • “Volver a Comenzar” – Cafe Tacvba (Best Alternative Song)
  • “Pintame De Colores” - Emilio Estefan, Jr., Gloria Estefan, Alberto Gaitán & Ricardo Gaitán (Best Tropical Song)
  • “Som Da Chava” – Soraya Moraes (Best Christian Album – Portuguese Language)
  • “Maracaibo Oriental” – Beny Moré
  • “Samba Pa Ti” – Carlos Santana
  • “El Bacalao” – Julio Iglesias
  • “Tiburon” – Vicentico
  • “Candela” – Buena Vista Social Club
  • “Dame El Fuego De Tu Amor” – Attaque 77
  • “Mariposa Traicionera” – Maná
  • “De Ushuia A La Quiaca” – Gustavo Santoalalla
  • “Minha Galera” – Manu Chao
  • “Oye Como Va” – Carlos Santana
  • “Velha Infancia” – Tribalistas
  • “Si Estás Ahí” – John Legend and Juanes (live performance at the 2008 Latin Grammys)
  • “Los Caminos De La Vida” – Vicentico

While we we’re off the air last week, I was searching online for some cool, interesting songs, and I managed to find an artist that I haven’t really heard before. His name is Antonio Carlos Jobim, and he hails all the way from the sunny, tropical country of Brazil. A popular singer who started in the late 50s, Jobim was one of the initial pioneers of the popular Brazilian sound — bossa nova. Although he passed away about 14 years ago, his music is still very popular to this day (you can even ask Sean, my producer!). Nevertheless, we will play some of his music next week, even some compilations he produced with the great Frank Sinatra (Ol’ Blue Eyes himself).

Hasta la proxima y que Dios les bendiga!

Oh yea, and:

BARACK OBAMA!!!!!

chau ;)

Just some thoughts…

You know, there’s 6 days left until Election Day and it’s obvious that the campaigning is getting tougher for John McCain and easier for Barack Obama. Today, I wondered about the plans both candidates have for the Latino community.

Since Tiempo Latino is a show targeted towards the Latino community, I think it’s imperative to compare the two on issues that pertain to this particular group of Americans. Being a regular facebook user, I have noticed Obama’s reign over the technological world, as he has reached millions via the Internet. Like John McCain, Barack Obama has his own facebook page, but here’s where the two show their difference: Barack Obama has many other pages that target certain communities of America. Some of these pages are for example “California for Obama,” “African Americans for Obama,” and “Veterans for Obama.” What about John McCain? Only 9 facebook pages are dedicated to the Republican nominee. Only 9? Obviously, Obama has the upper hand in outreach through facebook.

But that’s not just what I want to get at. The main target audience of this post is for the Latinos in America, which is not to say that non-Latinos should not read this post. Since it is important for one to compare and analyze the two candidates for the presidency, especially in these crucial final 6 days, I’ve done some comparing of my own. In looking at the issues both candidates have posted on their websites that relate to the Latino community, I’ve noticed that John McCain does not offer key, detailed policies that help the Latino community whatsoever. In looking at the “Hispanics for McCain” section of his website, McCain’s campaign offers only 5 paragraphs about McCain’s experience with the Latino community and his beliefs towards them. On the other hand, Barack Obama offers plenty of information pertaining to his ideas that will help the Latino community. Want to know how much information he has on his policies for Latinos? The man even has a 49 paged “Latino Blueprint for Change.” A blueprint! Meaning a plan! And not just one plan, but 49 pages full of plans he has that will improve and strengthen the Latino community.

In retrospect, Obama has made a clear effort to reach out and help the Latino community, as well as various other communities of the United States. Compared to John McCain’s nonexistent detailed plans to help the Latino community, Obama shows his commitment to help the Latino community across America. It is obvious that with an Obama-Biden ticket, the Latino community will never be forgotten and will always have the attention it deservessomething not seen on a McCain-Palin ticket.

And to end on a note straight from César Chávez himself:

Sí SE PUEDE!!!

9/27/08 – Tiempo Latino Broadcast #2

Muy buenas tardes!!!! I’m your host, Mariano, for el “Tiempo Latino” on radiolaspositas.com. Today we finally had the first smooth, full two-hour length show of the semester! Yes! We have finally reached a breakthrough, after my first two shows were marred with technical problems, lol. But in case you missed today’s “Tiempo Latino,” esta bien because posted below I have today’s playlist :) If you did hear today’s broadcast, you heard songs ranging from the classic rock guitar style of Carlos Santana, to the modern pop sound of the Colombian singer Juanes.

Again, I just want to reiterate that the purpose of “Tiempo Latino” is to broadcast music created by musicians commonly heard in the Latino market. So, what does that mean? Any song that is predominantly sung in Spanish (or in Portuguese, as in the case for Brazilian singers) is “a go” for the show. But of course I am also willing to check out any requests you might have, so hit up the phone line at (925) 424-1220, or you can IM me at my AIM screename: rlpdjonair. I’m on the air on Mondays from 12noon-2PM, so if you want a little bit of spice in your midday or you’re just tired of hearing the same old main stream music you hear on today’s radio, listen to “Tiempo Latino,” because I know you’ll get a kick out of the music I’ll be playing :) Who doesn’t like Latin American music?

So, as promised, here’s today’s playlist:

  • Mariposa Traicionera – Maná
  • Me Gusta Tu – Manu Chao
  • Soy Feliz – Vicentico
  • Se A Cabo – Carlos Santana
  • Quando Eu Quero Falar Com Deus – Roberto Carlos
